U.S. Mexico Border Pilgrimage Travel Study
Nogales, Arizona

Expected Dates - Summer: May 10 - May 15, 2015

Program Description
This University Ministry/Sociology Social Justice Pilgrimage invites students to journey to the U.S/Mexico Border to witness the pursuit of justice, with a specific focus on immigration.  Through the experience, University Ministry hopes to invite more students to a living faith that seeks justice. Those students, we hope, invite other students to join in this ministry.

Before traveling to the border, students will take part in an intentional, educational, faith based formation process, which will adequately prepare students for their educational and theological experience on the pilgrimage. With this specific pilgrimage, that formation process can occur in one of two ways: 1 credit course or 3 credit course.

Courses
You will be registered for the course during the spring 2015 semester. You should consult with your major advisor to ascertain which course will be most appropriate for your academic plan. In addition to the coursework that you will be doing while you are travelling, you will also have course meetings on campus before the trip. The 3 credit course will meet once a week on Wednesdays from 2:00-4:30 after Spring Break. The 1 credit course will meet 2-3 times before the trip occurs. These meetings will provide an opportunity to better prepare for all of the things that you will experience during your travel component.

Required Course
20-206-3 Topics: US-Mexico Border Experience (1 credit)
or
20- 206-4  Topics: US-Mexico Border Experience (3 credits)

Course Description
In cooperation with University Ministry, this course provides a travel experience to the U.S.-Mexico Border. The Border and U.S. immigration policy are highly controversial subjects that involve key sociological and social justice issues. This course will begin by introducing students to a sociological analysis of these subjects and conclude with a 5 day travel experience at the Border itself. The travel experience will enhance the material presented in the classroom and provide students with the opportunity to see first-hand the social justice concern in that region.

Cost
The cost of the 2016 U.S. Mexico Border Pilgrimage Travel Study program is expected to be approximately $1,100. The program fee includes airfare, accommodation, meals, local transportation, site visits, administrative fees, and program-sponsored excursions. In most cases, the tuition costs for the courses will be included in the normal Lewis tuition package rate. Both the course/seminar and the program fee will be placed onto your student account during the 2015 Spring semester.

The program fee does not include additional meals, supplies, personal expenses, and any passport and visa fees.

Program fees are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.

Application
To be eligible, you must be a Lewis student with at least a 2.75 GPA. There are no language prerequisites for this program.
