College of Nursing & Health Professions Travel Study

Expected Dates - Summer: June 13 – 22, 2017

Program Description
Led by CONHP professors Dina Schreader and Ellen Renna, this program provides you the exciting chance to experience Ireland while earning Lewis Nursing credit. This program will include visits to hospitals, clinics, and Nursing schools in Belfast, Dublin, and Galway.  There will also be cultural visits to a number of sites on the Emerald Isle, including:
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Clonmacnoise Monastery
  • Kylemore Abbbey
  • Giant's Causeway
  • Hill of Tara
  • Sites within the cities of Belfast, Dublin, and Galway

This Travel Study program will focus on environmental and cultural characteristics of Ireland and the relationship to healthcare trends, healthcare delivery systems, and the profession of nursing. Nursing education, nursing roles and career options, healthcare delivery systems, and healthcare trends will be explored and discussed in comparison to US counterparts. Emphasis will be on respect for human and environmental diversity and the impact on health, illness, and the provision of nursing care. Because of the cities that you will be visiting, you will have the opportunity to see both the Republic of Ireland's health system, as well as the National Health System (NHS) of the united Kingdom.

You will be registered for the CONHP Ireland course during either the Spring 2017 or Fall 2017 semester, depending on your academic track. You should consult with your major advisor to ascertain which courses will be most appropriate for your academic plan. In addition to the coursework that you will be doing while you are travelling, you will also have meetings on campus before the trip. These meetings will provide an opportunity to better prepare for all of the things that you will experience during your travel component.

Undergraduate Pre-licensure BSN and BAC/BSN Course:
NURS 33600 Professional Development II: Healthcare Trends (2 SH)

Undergraduate RN/BSN Courses:
NURS 40200 Professional Development and Leadership (3 SH)

NURS 43200 Promoting Healthy Community (Theory Portion-3 SH)

Continuing Education:
Continuing Education credit will be offered to participants who are licensed nurses and are not taking the trip for academic credit.  CONHP faculty and nurse colleagues would also qualify for Continuing Education credit.  The college of Nursing and Health Professions is an approved provider of Continuing Education as per the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

You will stay in shared rooms in comfortable hotels and single person rooms in residence halls during your stay in Ireland.

The cost of the CONHP Ireland 2017 Travel Study program is expected to be $TBD.  Those wishing a single room will pay an additional $399.  The program fee includes airfare, accommodation, local transportation, breakfast each day, some dinners, museum visits, administrative fees, and program-sponsored excursions. In most cases, the tuition costs for the courses will be included in the normal Lewis tuition package rate.  Both the course(s) and the program fee will be placed onto your student account.

The program fee does not include additional meals, supplies, personal expenses, and any passport and visa fees.

Program fees are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.

To be eligible, you must be a Lewis student with at least a 2.75 GPA who has Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior standing or will have that standing when you participate.  There are no language prerequisites for this program..
