Program Description
Spend a month studying Spanish in the beautiful country of Costa Rica. You can study either during June or July at Veritas University, studying Spanish intensively. There is also the option to take specialized courses for Medical Spanish and Spanish for Law Enforcement.

Students will study in the capital city, San José, at Veritas University. The Collegium Veritas, created in 1976, was one of the four founding schools of the first private university in Costa Rica. The University is committed to offering the best in academics while also responding to the practical demands of its students and society. The University is renowned in Costa Rica for its design, art, architecture and photography programs. In addition, the University welcomes international students to study Spanish at its International Programs Department (DPI). There is an enrollment of approximately 1,500 Costa Rican students and about 150 international students during a given semester. All students enjoy access to the university library, computer labs, and study areas.

Program Links Courses
No previous knowledge of Spanish is required to participate in the program. You will take a one month intensive Spanish Language course, which will be 5 Lewis credits.

Required Courses (5 credits):
  • Spanish Language (Beginning - Advanced)*
*In addition to regular intensive language courses, there are some specialty courses as well. Students in Nursing and health professions can choose to take the Health Care Courses in English and Medical Spanish track.  The Summer track includes a Service Learning component, will give students an opportunity to have an even deeper engagement with the community while earning academic credit.

You will have a truly enjoyable and immersive experience living in a Costa Rican (Tico) home with a local family. All housing is located in middle to upper class neighborhoods and offers glimpses of everyday life with easy access to your university and to city amenities. The experience of living in another culture will be both educational and rewarding. You just have to remember to stay open-minded at all times.

ISA San Jose homestays allow students to experience aspects of Costa Rican or "tico" lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor. Students have the opportunity for complete cultural immersion by staying with locals and experiencing the Costa Rican way of life. In your homestay, you will have your own bedroom, although there may be another ISA student living in the same homestay. Every family has been carefully selected by ISA's resident staff in order to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable and immersive living situation. Homestays include breakfast and dinner every day (except for excursion days) and laundry service once a week.

For the current program charge amount, please contact the Study Abroad office.  The program charge includes Lewis tuition, housing for a homestay, breakfasts and dinners, on-site orientation, program-sponsored excursions, medical insurance, and a mandatory $300 Lewis Study Abroad fee.

The program charge does not include airfare, passport and visa fees, additional meals, supplies, and personal expenses.

Program charges are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.

No previous knowledge of Spanish is required to participate in the program. To be eligible, you must be a Lewis student with at least a 3.0 GPA who has Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior standing or will have that standing when you participate.
