International Student Teaching
Fall: August - December
Spring: January - May
A semester in Rio! This College of Education-only program gives its students the opportunity to fulfill their student teaching commitments at an American school right in the heart of the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Students spend the semester living and student teaching at the Our Lady of Mercy School (OLM), an American accredited KK-12 bilingual school located in the quiet central neighborhood of Botafogo in Rio.
The vibrant city of Rio is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro and the second largest city in Brazil. Known for its beaches and stunning scenery, Rio will be the host of the 2014 World Cup for soccer and for the 2016 Olympics.
You will be registered as a full time student at Lewis University for the appropriate College of Education courses to complete your student teaching requirements.
While in Rio, you will be housed in double rooms in a modest villa located next to the school on a small gated street. The villa has shared lining areas including a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and patio. There is also a washing machine for doing your laundry.
Breakfast and lunch is provided at the school. You will also be provided with a R$100 per week stipend for food and incidentals.
For the current program charge amount, please check the Budget Sheets located at the top of the page or contact the Study Abroad Office. The program charge includes Lewis tuition, accommodation in a residence next to the school, two meals per day Monday-Friday, a weekly stipend, round trip airfare, medical insurance, and a mandatory $300 Lewis Study Abroad fee.
The program fee does not include passport and/or visa fees, additional meals, supplies, and personal expenses.
Program charges are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.
To be eligible, you must be an Education major at Lewis with at least a 3.0 GPA who will have Senior standing and ready to do your student teaching component when you participate. There are no language prerequisites for this program. You should contact Joan Williams in the College of Education to complete the application process.
