GERMANY - Berlin
Fall: September – December
Spring: January - April
Live and study in the vibrant metropolitan city of Berlin! This opportunity to study at the Berlin European Studies (FU-BEST) program at Freie-Universität-Berlin for the Fall or Spring semesters is available to you through the LaSallian Study Abroad Consortium by Saint Mary’s University of California.
The Berlin European Studies program (FU-BEST) is hosted by the Freie Universität Berlin (FU-Berlin), a university which was founded in 1948 and has since become one of the premiere universities in Germany. The FU-BEST program is housed in a villa located on the FU campus in the south west part of the city. In addition to housing classroom space and the FU-BEST staff, the facilities also feature wireless internet and a computer lab. While on the program, you learn about the German language and culture, while taking other FU-BEST courses taught in English. Small field trips are an integral of the courses, and the program includes a week long excursion. Past excursions have included Poland, Munich, Dresden, Prague, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Budapest, Paris, London, and other destinations.
While in Berlin, you will take a full load of courses. While there is no language prerequisite of this program, you will be required to take a German language course – either a standard 3 credit course or an intensive 6 credit course – at your level while you are on the program. The remaining courses will be taught in English. You can select from courses in a variety areas, including:
- Art History
- Comparative Literature
- Cultural studies
- Environmental Studies
- European Union
- Film Studies
- German History
- German and European Politics
- Legal Studies
- Music History
- Transatlantic Relations
While in Berlin, you will be housed in a homestay. A homestay gives you a unique chance for cultural immersion, giving you the best opportunity to practice your language and communication skills. The homestay includes a private room with shared bathroom facilities, as well as two meals per day (breakfasts and dinners).
For the current program charge amount, please check the Budget Sheet for the program located at the top of the page or contact the Study Abroad Office. The program charge includes Lewis tuition, housing in a homestay, two meals per day (breakfast and dinner), on-site orientation, medical insurance, and a mandatory $300 Lewis Study Abroad fee.
The program charge does not include airfare, passport and visa fees, additional meals, supplies, and personal expenses.
Program charges are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.
To be eligible, you must be a Lewis student with at least a 3.0 GPA who has Sophomore, Junior, or first semester Senior standing or will have that standing when you participate.
