Dublin Summer Internship Programme (UCD)

Summer: June - July

Program Description
Spend the summer studying at Ireland’s leading business school while participating in a credit-bearing internship. During this eight week program, you will study Irish culture and history or business at the University College, Dublin - Quinn School of Business (UCD Quinn) and participate in a six week credit-bearing internship coordinated by the UCD Quinn School of Business.

Ireland is country with a rich artistic legacy, a complex history, and stunning landscapes. Dublin, the capital, is often called the city of writers due to its association with some of the greatest writers in the English language. Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, Oliver Goldsmith, Bernard Shaw and James Joyce were just a few of the writers who once called this exciting city their home.

University College Dublin (UCD) is a dynamic, modern university - the ideal surroundings for learning and discovery. Established in 1854, the university had a major role in the history of Ireland due to its alumni, which have included famous architects, entrepreneurs, politicians, and writers (James Joyce graduated with his BA in 1902). As Ireland forges a new identity through relationships with international partners, the university is adopting an increasingly international outlook.

Due to rapid growth during the 1960’s and 1970’s, UCD relocated from St Stephen's Green in Dublin’s city center to the Belfield campus, about 2 miles south of the city center. The university still maintains Newman House in the city center, one of its original buildings, and there is also a campus facility at Blackrock, Dublin, where the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business is located. Today, the university has about 22,000 students, with over 2,000 international students from over 50 countries.

As part of your study abroad program, UCD wants you to appreciate and understand the richness of Irish culture and society. In addition to a required Irish History and Culture course, you will be taken on a series of field trips and excursions both in the city of Dublin and across the country accompanied by Irish students.

Courses
You will take two 3-credit courses while you are in Dublin – Irish History and Culture and Dublin Internship.  The Irish History and Culture course will be taught intensively during the first week of the program and will include field trips to historically important sites.  The Dublin Internship course will complement the internship placement, culminating in the presentation of a research paper related to your internship.

Internship
UCD-Quinn will work with you prior to your arrival to Dublin to place you in an internship at a leading Irish or International company or organization in one of the following areas:

  • Arts & Culture
  • Business, Finance & Economics
  • International Studies, International Relations
  • Health services & Social Issues
  • Marketing, Public Relations & Advertising
  • Recreation, Leisure & Hospitality

Placements for past participants have included internships at IBM, Vodafone, Bank of Scotland, Aer Aran, Accenture, American Chamber of Commerce, GE Money, and Bank of Ireland.

Housing
You will be housed in on-campus accommodations during your time at the UCD Quinn School.  On-campus accommodations consist of residences on the Belfield and Blackrock campuses that have two, three, four, and five room self-catered apartments. These apartments are fully equipped and furnished except for kitchen/tableware. You can either bring these items with you or purchase them at the local shops, or purchase a ready-made kit through UCD’s Accommodation Office. On-campus accommodations are limited, however, so UCD Quinn cannot guarantee that all participants will placed in them.

In the rare instance when on-campus accommodations cannot be arranged, off-campus accommodations may be a possibility.  You will be assisted by both the UCD Quinn Study Abroad Programme and the UCD Accommodation Office to find suitable housing – usually in an apartment or house. If you prefer to be in a homestay, UCD holds a list of families who offer bed, breakfast and evening meal for either five or seven days per week.

Cost
For the current program charge amount, please check the Budget Sheets located at the top of the page or contact the Study Abroad Office.  The program charge includes Lewis tuition, housing for on-campus accommodations, on-site orientation, program-sponsored excursions, medical insurance, and a mandatory $300 Lewis Study Abroad fee.

The program charge does not include airfare, passport and visa fees, off-campus accommodations, meals, supplies, and personal expenses. Meal plans are available through the UCD Accommodation Office.

Program charges are based on costs of the prior year, as well as projections for the current and coming years. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it difficult to state a fixed cost. Lewis University, therefore, reserves the right to adjust program fees and the right to cancel or alter programs and courses.
